old varavan at Winton Caravan Park

This photo was taken at the Winton Caravan Park, it is a homemade caravan with old ford wire wheels and a stainless steel shell. it has been around australia twice it has been rolled over once when the drawbar broke away from the chasis. It just goes to show that you dont need a flash van to travel. The owner was a tall man and in his late sixties and his wife was only a bit shorter, they slept in the van and it had a fold out kitchen at the rear. the overall length of the van was about 10 feet.

My uncle built a little 12 foot van on the side of the road in front of his unit.It served the purpose. but when he built it the road was on a slope .And when he straightend it it was on a slant. lol true story.his next venture was a ferro concrete boat When he put it the water it was heavy on one side so he just kept putting concrete there till it straitened up. lolHe had great times in it. moral to these stories does not matter what they look like .As long as your comfortable.

Ha! Great stories!

We used to see many home-made vans like that when caravaning was not so common. The roads were pretty bad then! I have an idea that a lot of people slept in their cars and "made do" till they got to their destination.....Linda

Yes, you're right, I remember our woodwork teacher at school made one, it was a timber frame and plywood construction. When I first started caravaning in the mid seventies there were a lot around.

My father-in-law built a folding bed and cupboards in the VW Kombi. All very neat and ship-shape , and they did a lot of miles using that as a base. In those days you could park by the side of the road wherever you wanted, without a care.
