Someone tried to hack GOT last night.

If you're like JC, you would have received multiple emails in your inbox this morning, notifiying you of replies to (very old) posts you had made.

Last night at around 8.30, GOT was hit by a bot. It spammed us 84 times in less than 5 minutes, with the intention of hacking in, attacking the GOT password boundaries, and causing a massive amount of mischief - up to and including the overturning of the whole site.

HUGE thanks to GOT member Daemon, whose tech know-how and email monitoring setup he has, meant that he was aware instantaenously of the spamming and imminent hacking. He then made me aware of the problem, and I deleted the users and their (multitudinous!!!) spam comments. This now means that the site is fine again. 

Something else was confirmed to me last night. I didn't receive Daemon's message until almost 10pm, well over an hour since the hack attempt. And the site was still fine (although inundated with spam and a couple of 'bot' users). So I'm VERY pleased to announce that the GOT security system is working extremely well, and kudos to Sean and Mindy for doing such a good job in the first place!

So - long story short - you may have had several (or several hundred, depending on how many posts you have!) email notifications last night. GOT is fine, and performed admirably when under attack. But sorry for any inconvenience!
