5 the Webcam

The webcam (short for Web Camera) is a device used for taking images – either still images (ie photos) or moving images (ie video).

Each webcam is setup differently, but there are many common elements – each needs to be ‘plugged in’ to the computer somehow either through a cord plugged into a jack in the tower) or connected internally, where the webcam is embedded into the computer somewhere (generally the monitor). They will also (usually!) come with some form of instructions, either in a book, booklet, pamphlet or CD. These instructions will tell you how to use your webcam to take still images (if it is able to) or video.

A webcam’s most popular use is to permit your computer to act as a videophone, where you call someone using your computer instead of your telephone, and you can see them as well as hear them. To be able to use your webcam and computer as a videophone, you will need a software program to use. The person you are calling will need the same software program too. You will also need speakers and a microphone set up and ready to use!
